Veterans Day

Veterans Day

VETERANS DAY (not ..s' or ..'s) is a day for honoring veterans.

Memorial day and Veterans Day are not the same. Memorial Day is a time to remember those who gave their lives for our country. Veterans day honors those who have served our country, past and present.

Armistice Day, as it was originally called, commemorated the end of fighting for WWI on the 11th hour 11th day 11th month. Through time and a few more wars, in 1954 Congress amended the commemoration changing "armistice" to "veterans."

This day would now honor American veterans of all wars. Additional time passed ... then the Uniform Holiday Bill in 1968 followed by Public Law 94-97 in 1975 [how creative was that name?], ... basically Veterans Day celebrations moved around on the calendar before settling on November 11. Many of our allies also celebrate this honorable holiday albeit under different names and ceremonies.

Thank you past and present service members, all of our veterans. You protect our land, our people, our ways of life, our flag (a symbol of who we are).

I've walked and greeted people at many random doors in many cities, since the start of my endeavor for Texas' 24th Congressional District US House. I've met many veterans and-or relatives to veterans.

One Euless husband and wife gifted me an embroidered star from a retired flag and quoted me a beautiful speech about our heros. One Carrollton man gifted me these words about that embroidered star (inside my Identification badge since receiving), "I am part of our American Flag that has flown over the USA. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that you are not forgotten."

Our veterans age (we all age). Like the flags that can no longer fly, many of our veterans have become tattered and worn in service to all of us. "Thank you," ... VETERANS.
